Consumer Information – Ultrasound

Hobart OBGYN provides a full range of diagnostic ultrasound services for both obstetrics and gynaecology. Our ultrasounds are regularly replaced in line with new technology and a strict maintenance policy is in place in accordance to accreditation guidelines and protocols.

Obstetrics

At your first obstetric visit an ultrasound examination is usually performed to determine or confirm dates as well as to confirm viability, singleton or multiple pregnancy. Early pregnancy dating may require a trans vaginal ultrasound to determine dates accurately. We also perform growth and wellbeing scans throughout each of the trimesters.

Ultrasound is an integral part of pregnancy assessment and management and forms part of each of our routine obstetric visits.

On occasions we may obtain a second opinion from a sub specialist Sonologist or Fetomaternal specialist should the need arise.

Gynaecology

Ultrasound nowadays forms part of routine female pelvic assessment thus aids in management of many gynaecological conditions. Pelvic ultrasound is also often indicated for bladder and or pelvic floor muscle assessment or assessment of prolapse. The ovaries, tubes and uterus can be assessed by diagnostic ultrasound.

Pelvic ultrasound usually requires both transabdominal and transvaginal approaches to properly assess gynaecological conditions.

Ultrasound is routinely used in investigation of infertility, ectopic pregnancy and a wide range of gynaecological conditions.
