Dr Stephen Bradford

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Stephen Bradford commenced his career in health as a student nurse at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1987. This was a very rewarding experience which enabled him to secure his passion for the health industry whilst also pursuing his other passion which is sailing. After completing his nursing training, he worked as a Registered Nurse while continuing to sail and was fortunate to represent Australia in the 1993 and 1994 Olympic 470 class at the world titles. He also competed at state level in various international classes.

Stephen’s dreams were realised in 2000 when he commenced his medical degree at the University of Newcastle. Stephen and his girlfriend (now wife) relocated to Newcastle for 6 years and continued to work as a palliative care nurse throughout his medical degree.

Returning to his home city of Brisbane in 2006, he pursued a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and was granted admission to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology training program commencing in January 2008. He worked in various large hospitals in Queensland during his first 4 years of training which enabled him to expand his skills as a future consultant.  It was in his fourth year of Obstetrics and Gynaecology training that he decided to pursue further study in the area of fertility. He completed his fifth year of training in Canberra supported by his wife and two daughters while also welcoming the arrival of his third daughter. Stephen secured a position as a Gynaecology Oncology registrar at the Royal Hobart Hospital for his final and sixth year of training while also completed his Masters of Reproductive Health.

In 2013, Stephen was fortunate to be asked to join the team at Hobart OBGYN and Tas IVF in his final year of training. Since that time, he has been building his fertility, obstetrics and gynaecology practices with great fervour and passion. He briefly returned to sailing when competing in the 2014 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race with Dr Mike Pritchard aboard his yacht Audre finishing 8th overall and being the first Tasmanian boat home.  However, sailing has again been put on the back burner as his practice and weekend commitments to his family are the priority.

Stephen has an interest in fertility, obstetrics, general gynaecology and advanced laparoscopy including robotic-assisted surgical procedures at Calvary Hospital with the da Vinci surgical system.  His plan for his practice is to be able to support women from teenage years through fertility, infertility, antenatal care and delivery. He has developed an interest in the treatment of women with pelvic pain. In 2016, he spent time with Dr Susan Evans in Adelaide to learn about management of this condition including treatment with Botox into the deep pelvic floor. He is an advocate that chronic pelvic pain is a very complex problem that often requires a team approach which can be supported at Hobart OBGYN with our multidisciplinary team who deliver a comprehensive treatment regime.

Stephen currently works at Hobart OBGYN to provide care to obstetrics and gynaecology patients while also working at Fertility Tasmania to provide care for patients seeking fertility treatments including IVF.
